Although wedding email scams have been around for several years, there seems to be an increase of this scam among wedding professionals lately. The number that I receive each week is ridiculous. If you are new to the industry or you have been lucky enough to not get any of this junk mail, please be cautious.
The objective in the email is to lure the wedding professional into being hired. They will over pay you with a worthless check, money order, or stolen credit card and then ask the wedding planner to mail them back the overage. They ask you to book various vendors that that need and usually request very specific things for their wedding day – I guess so they sound more convincing. Usually they are not in this country and want you to handle all arrangements including accommodations, ceremony, reception for guests coming from all over for a wedding that is just two or three months away. Obviously, the check they send will not clear the bank because the funds do not exist.
Be cautious and do not become a victim to these idiots. Remember what Grandma used to tell you, “If it sounds too good to be true…” You can report Internet scams to the Internet Fraud Complaint Center.
